About the Artist
Sanjib Mallik
From my earliest days as an artist, I have been captivated by the singular nature of encaustic painting — the only medium in which paint moves from solid to liquid and back to solid again. This transformative process connects me deeply to my roots in India, a land with an ancient artistic past, and inspires my own revival of this timeless medium.
I work with wax, paraffin, and heat to create large-scale works that bridge antiquity and the present. My encaustics are painted on translucent panels, evoking the depth and texture of marbleized surfaces — artifacts reborn for contemporary living. Through layering, carving, burnishing, and fusing colors into the wax, I reveal luminous human forms — often women — whose presence echoes the aura of ancient portraiture while speaking in a modern visual language.

What draws collectors to my work is not only its radiance but also its permanence. Encaustic art is remarkably stable and colorfast, offering pieces that endure as heirlooms for generations. For me, each painting is an act of reinvention: reviving an ancient art in innovative ways that breathe new life into my practice and open endless pathways of creativity.
